IIBC Essay Contest
Every year, the ESS members take part in many contests. One of them is the IIBC Essay Contest. In that contest, participants need to write an essay about the theme that the host announces. The word limit is 500 to 700 words. It is a difficult job for the participants, but finishing the essay is very fulfilling.

Mie Prefecture’s 34th Annual Senior High School English Skit Contest
Our skit for 2024 was titled “Chasing the Melody.” The story was about a boy who was feeling empty and lonely all the time and how he found his passion, which was music. At first, he couldn’t express his feelings to anyone, but in the end, he was finally able to sing his feelings to his crush and get her heart. He also became friends with everyone and they lived happily ever after. Although it was my first ever skit, with the help of our ALTs and teachers, we were able to win 1st place.

Mie Prefecture’s 34th Annual Senior High School English Speech Contest and The 17th Tokai-Hokuriku Block English Speech Contest
It was my first time participating in a speech contest where I had to write my own speech. The first contest, held here in Mie, determines the representative of Mie for the Tokai-Hokuriku block contest. Only after winning the second contest will you be able to participate in the national contest. I was very grateful to have made it really far in the contest.
The Seventeenth All Japan High School English Speech Contest
I was very honored to have had the opportunity to witness the amazing speeches of the
other prefectures. Although I was very nervous, I was able to recite my speech quite clearly and smoothly, with few hiccups. Even though I wasn’t selected to be in the top 3, I feel I have grown immensely and hope to continue to enhance my vocabulary and expressions. I was told that I should relax when giving a speech and deepen my research about words and statistics I use. Also, in the Q&A, I was told to be able to explain the things I write in my speech and give examples. I hope to become a better writer and I will be cautious of the feedback I received from the judges. As for the participants, each and every one of us worked hard to get to this last stage of the competition and I believe everyone gave wonderful and unforgettable speeches. I am very thankful to have heard every single one of them. This being my last speech, I have no regrets. Thank you, ESS, for giving me this opportunity.
